It might be said that the field of cybernetics has issued a large promissory note that as yet has not been paid. This has happened not because of small machine memory and slow machine performance, but because of a shortage of ideas; i.e., ideas regarding methods of machine programming needed for the accurate imitation of the behavior of a man under varying circumstances. Wherein then lies the main difficulty?

Using and abusing anecdotes

Anecdotes and personal stories evoke emotions more easily, hence are often used in science communication. However, anecdotes can be easily abused to tell any story. Therefore, one must be always suspicious when an anecdote is given, and science communicators should always follow anecdotes with statistics and cite sources.

The four-chinese-letter-sayings (四字成語) often has the same characteristic as anecdotes in that they are memorable with associated stories. But often times, they are opposing sayings that you can use to express one’s interpretation of the situation, just like finding anecdotes (or quotes) to support opposing opinions or “theories”.

We must be careful in using anecdotes and propagating them.

If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?
